Why should you have your skis stone ground anyway? This process will make your skis better in two ways. First it will flatten the base, improving the skis handling and stability. Second it will open the "pores" of the base material as it structures the base. A stone ground ski will allow the base to better manage the amount of liquid water under the ski and improve the glide. Grinding provides consistent uniform structure that can be varied to fit the conditions. Thus faster skis.

We use Wintersteiger's Micro 1, the best of the best. Our machine has been customized to produce the best possible Nordic grinds. Our technicians are trained by Wintersteiger technicians so you are assured the best product possible. Our technicians are second to none and have the experience necessary to maximize your skis performance. The person running the machine is the most important part of this. It is better to have skilled technician working with an old machine than a person who is not well skilled using the best technology available. We take pride in the quality of our work. We do have other shops call for our "recipes", and we appreciate the compliment. We know you will find it worth the effort to have Sports Rack Ltd./ Skiguys.com Race Services tune your skis.

Getting your skis stone ground by Sports Rack is easy and takes only a short time. Box up the skis carefully (call us if you need a box and for $7.00 we'll send you one, shipping included). Make sure to insure your shipment.

Please choose from the following grinds for your skis. If unsure which which grind is best for you please call and ask our technicians during hours listed on the order form and we'll be happy to answer any questions you have. We use a small number of grind choices because there is little difference between many of the grinds that others offer.

 Grind  Application  Notes

RC

Extreme Cold Dry snow 14°F and Below

Essentially a Blank
As close as you can get to no structure

CP

Cold Powder  10°F to 22°F Great low structure grind for the average Minnesota conditions.

NC

18°F to 34°F Best allround stone grind

WW

28°F + and lots of moisture This is a very aggressive grind made to break the suction from under you sk.

Your skis go through a 12 step process and then are returned to you. A soft travel wax is applied and you should iron in at least three layers of wax before skiing on them. This will maximize your skis performance. If in doubt which grind to choose, call us. If you can't decide between two grinds, go with the colder grind as you can always add structure to the base. This is what the top skiers do as you can't grind your skis every week for racing. They would grind off the base after one season. They add structure (because the added structure is pressed in it pops back!) See the Toko Structurite.
